Boy of the Painted Cave

Pre-Write 9/28/06
Wat are you good at?
1. I think im good at artss & crafts, drawing and playing sports. I really enjoy doing these things.

How do u feel when your doing the thing your good at?
2. I feel good because im doing the things that I like and that makes me feel great.

How would you feel if someone didnt let you do the thing your good at?
3. I would feel mad and bored because I like to do those things and if I didn't do them I would go crazy. I would go crazy because I hate to just sit around at home and do nothing.

Chapter 1 10/3/06
1.Wat problems or confict are presented in chapter one?
One of the conflits is that Tao's tribe is hungry and they dont have any food. Another conflict is that Tao has found a wolf-dog that is starving but will not eat.

2. I think at the end the tribe will find an easy way to get food and they will all be happy. I think that in the Tao will find a way to help the wolf-dog and that the wolf-dog will help him in return.

Chapter 2 10/6/06

What two most important events happen in this chapter?
One of the important things in this chapter was that Tao found a wolf-dog that was starving but would not eat. Another inportant event was that Tao went into the slough and though he was about to encounter himself with a evil spirit.

Chapter 3 10/5/06

1.What do Tao and Ram learn to do together?
They learn to hunt by helping each other.

2.What decision does Tao teel Volt?

He tells him that he shall go and hunt for himself.

3. Look at the decisions Tao made and look at them from Volts presepctive. Prented your are Volt. How would you feel?
I'm Volt , Tao's leader. Since Tao wants to try to hunt with a wolf-dog we should let him go and let him hunt for himself. Who knows what kind of evil spirits that animal can bring? We already have enough troubles in our tribe, we don't need more. That boy is causing us danger and I will not let my tribe down. My tribe has worked too hard and to long to be ruined by some folish boy who can not concentrate on his hunting. If we don't hunt enough our tribe will starve then people will be begin to die. If Tao is even thinking about being in our tribe with that creature I will punish him and then kick him out. I will make clear to that boy that I am not fooling around.

Chapter 8 10/11/06

For example, let's say that the parents of three kids get a divorce. They go to the court to decide who is going to keep their kids. The dad convinces the court that he should keep the kids and therefore the mom is not allowed to see them or get close to them. The court does allowed the kids to send her mom letters. So her 6 year old daughter sends her a letters and in one she sounds worried becuase her dad is beating them up. She's doesn't tell her straight out but she gives them a lot of hints. So she plans to go see her kids, she calls the court and asks if she could just see her kids to make sure everything is ok, at least for an hour. The court says a rule is a rule so no. Her daughter sends her another letter and she sounds even more worried. She doesn't know what to do.

I think that she should go behind the court's and dad's back to see her kids because it is for here kids safety. She should go visit them while there at school and talk to them. If the dad is beating them she should go tell the court that her daughter told them in one of the letters that dad is beating them up and that he should not be allowed to keep them.

Chapter 9 10/13/06

Why do you think Graybeard changed his mind?
I think Graybeard changed his mind because he saw that Tao had some talent in him and that he really, really wanted to paint and draw images. I also think that Graybeard changed his mind because he wanted to keep passing down the talent but he had none to pass it down to and Tao was a boy that really wanted and was determine to learn this.

What does this say about his character?
This say that Graybeard is a nice man because he allows himself to be open minded about his thoughts and he will help Tao with his dreams.

Chapter 11
Do you think Graybeard is a good teacher? Why?
Yes I think Graybeard is a good teacher. I think he is a good teacher because Tao said "Only a few words from the master and i am already doing better."

Would you like to be thought a skill by him? Why?
Yes I would like to be thought a skill by him because he seems to know what his doing and if that was the case I woud get better and better at it. I do think he is a bit critical but besides that I think he would be a great teacher.

The Giver

Chapter 1

Pg 10 Quote:
"You know theres no thrid chance. The rules say if there's a thrid transsgresion he will simply be released."
Questions/Comments:
Does that mean that this community has no jail? Or do they but only use it on special occassions?
I think that this is a better way of handeling the people the don't obey the rules. In our society if someone breaks the rules they are sent to jail and then after there time is done they let them go. But sometimes people dont learn their lesson and keep on breaking the rules and doing things there not suppose to. Sometimes they have to stay in jail all their lives but that doesn't stop people from breaking out of jail. If we did the same thing i think it would be better because we given people enough chances to understand the consequences and they dont listen, so they shouldn't be aloowed in our society.

Chapter 2
Pg 15 Qoute:
"Ther was no way, really, to know in advance. It was a secret selction made by the elders..."
Questions/Comments:
I don't like the i dea of having the elders picking your jobs. I mean what if they picked a job for you that you didn't like? You have to live with that job for the rest of your life. I know Jonas's father said that there are rarely any mistakes made but still for those fews who are dissapointed, what are they suppose to do? I don't think that they make exceptions to change an asiigment. I know they do this because sometimes people make mistakes thereselves at chosing there jobs so this is the same thing. Why not just let them chose there own jobs?

Chapter 3
Pg 21Quote:
"It was the first thing Jonas noticed as he looked at the newchild.....the pale eyes."
Comments/Questions:
I wonder why Jonas has pale eyes if nobody in his family does. It seems kind of strange to me that only three people in their whole community have pale eyes. I know that dark eyes are alot more common then light eyes but only three people seems like to little but it could be. What kind of got my attention is that i read that it said that it would fall into the catargory of rudeness to call the attention to something diffrent about someone. I know that it is kind of rude to do that but do they don't want people to notice? Do they want eveyone to be the same?

Chapter 4
Pg Quote:
"Larissa lifted her head and make sure no one was litsening. Then she confided, "I don't think Edna was very smart.""
Questions/Comments:
I kind of don't like it that the community doesn't let people speak their minds (that they have to make their staments or say what they think of in a low whisper) because everyone is diffrent, unique, and some people may even have great and wonderful ideas. They should allowed them to speak their minds like in our society because even though there not allowed they still do it because nobody's the same. They should all have rights and they should even allow them to make a few more choices than just were they spend their volunteer hours. I like to have options and im sure they would like to too.

Chapter 5
Pg 33 Quote:
"Usually, at the morning ritual when the family told their dreams, Jonas didn't contribute much."
Questions/Comments:
I don't like the idea of having to tell your dreams in the morning to your whole family because what if you have a dream that's personal to you and you don't wanna tell your whole family? If they don't that's breaking the rules and they don't wanna break the rules. So in a way their force to do that and i dont think its fair because everybody needs their own privacy.

Chapter 6
Pg 41 Quote
"Gabe had not yet gained the weight appropiate of lie nor begun to sleep soundly enough....normally such a newchild would be labeld Inadequat and released from the communite. "
Questions/Comments:
I don't like it that if a newchild has a bit of a problem it has to be released. It's not their fault that they have a problem. If it were somebody old enough to understand the rules (and the consequences) and they would misbehave then it's ok to release them. I don't mean a little thing like ask someody a rude question i mean something big that would use up one of the 3 chances they have. If they use all there 3 chances then its ok to release them. But if it's a child who's not even old enough to talk I don't think its fair to release them. They know no harm and they don't mean to cause any. All the community needs to do is to give them a little more attention. There's no need for release.

Chapter 7
Pg 49 Quote:
"Then the Chief Elder moved ahead in her speech."
Questions/Comments:
It sort of suprised me that the Chief Elder was a woman. It surprised me because in our society woman are allowed to run for President (that would be kind of like our Chief Elder) but they don't get much votes. I don't know why some people don't like the idea of having a woman as their president. Women are just as smart as men and they could make the right (or even better choices) for their society as well as men. So I don''t see the reason why not to vote for a woman. Still people don't vote for them and that gets me a little mad because sometimes they don't vote for them because they think that they would not be the right person for the job or just because the fact that they are a woman. So that is why it surprised me that the Chief Elder was a woman and I liked the fact that in their society they give women and men the same power.

Chapter 8
Pg 61 Quote:
"With the chant,Jonas knew, the community was accepting him and his new role, giving him life...."
Questions/Comments:
I like it that they chant Jonas's name to let him know that they except him as their new Receiver. It gives Jonas courage and it makes him feel secure and he doesn't feel as scared about it. It also makes him and his family feel very proud. I think we should do that in our community too. Not every single time something liltle happend but like for very big things. It would show that we give honor and respesct to the person and I think we would all like that.

Chapter 9
Pg 65 Quote:
"8. You may lie."
Queston/Comments:
I don't think that this community is ok because in the previous chapters they have said that no one in their community lies and now they have given Jonas rules about being able to lie. What if they give every single Twelve is given the opportunity to lie? Then their community is lieying even more by telling us (and the smaller children) not to lie and that nobody in their commnunity lies. At first I though that this was the perfect utopia, now im seeing that it's not.

Chapter 10
Pg 71 Quote:
"The books in his own dwelling were the only books that Jonas had ever seen. He had not known that other books existed."
Questions/Comments:
I do not like the idea of having books that only have rules in them. Books are wonderful things and thats not fair that they aren't able to see or experience reading them. I know some people hate to read but it's really hard to imagine not having books. Their some really great stories that come from books. They should aloowed them to have books and i wonder why they dont let them. This community is really starting to seem extremly weird.

Chapter 11
Pg 81 Quote:
"Suddenly he percieved the word for it : sunshine. He percieved that it came from the sky."
Questions/Comments:
When I first started reading this book I thought that they had perfect weather most of the time. I thought it was mostly sunny so that means there was sunshine. But Jonas barely found out the word sunshine so excatly what kind of weather do they have? Then I thought that maybe they had another word for it but if Jonas barely found out to what sunshine is, what it feels like and what it looks like. So this confuses me of excatly what weather they have...i wonder what it would look like and how it would feel. I would like to visit this community and see for myself.

Chapter 12
Pg 89 Quote:
".....The Giver said. "You're beginning to see the color red." "The what?"
Questions/Comments:
I was shocked when I found out that they did not see color. I always thought they did but now that I think of it they never mentioned color in the previous chapters. I agrre with Jonas and don't think it's fair that they can't see color. I wouldn't like living in a place were there was no color because everything would be and seem boring. But I guess for them it's not a problem because they don't even know that colors exsist. I don't like it that Sameness got rid of colors because there's really no reason to. Colors make evrything intresting and I would really be bother if I would live in a world with no color.

Chapter 13
Pg 92 Quote:
"It's the chosing that's important, isnt it? The Giver asked. Jonas nodded."
Questions/Comments:
I agree with Jonas and the Giver when they say that chosing is important. It's very important. I mean we make choices every single day of our lives. We chose our president, the one who will make choices for the whole country, and there's alot of other important choices we make. Like we chose to either live above or under the influence and yea i know it's alot safer the way their community deals with it but there's things you just have to make the desicion yourself. Or at least you should have the rigth to. Like I really don't agree with that the community gets to chose your husband or wife. You should have a right to chose who your gonna spend the rest of your life with. I really don't like that the community doesn't give then alot of choices.

Chapter 14
Pg 105 Quote:
"They have never known pain, he thought. The realzation made him feel despertaly lonely...."
Questions/Comments:
I know that the job of The Reciever is very important to this community but now i'm seeing that it's not a really fair job. It's not fair because it's a very painful and lonely job. It's also not fair that you have to go through all that pain in the job when you didnt even chose the job to start with! They shouldn't have to suffer a lonely life filled with painful memories! Sure there's alot of good memories but you have to live a lonely seperate life. They should at least chose two people to take on this job so that they could talk to each other about it and not have a very lonely life. I really would not like to be chosen as the new Receiver.

Chapter 15
Pg Quote:
" "
Questions/Comments:

Chapter 16
Pg 117Quote:
"They were called Grandparents. Grandparents?"
Question/Comments:
I wonder why the community doesn't let them have their grandparents live in their house. I think its because either they think that they won't be able to properly take care of them or because they are afraid of what people might think or say after the grabdparents pass away. They may even think both. But i'm not really crazy about this idea either because theres some famlies were the grandparents are really important in their life and yes it would hurt to see them pass away but life is really great with them. There like another set of parents that always cheer up when you down. I see that this is a "utopia" because no one gets hurt, no one feels no pain and no one knows anything painful. Maybe it's great for them but i would never trade the real world to live in this community.

Chapter 17
Pg 123 Quote:
"Today is declared an unscheduled holiay."
Question/Comments:
I like that the community gives them unscheduled holidays like they do to us at school and to some (not all) of our parents at their jobs. The thing that's strange about it is that when they give us a free holiday they usually tell us a couple of days before but to them they mke the announcment in the morning and they include everyone. They just don't direct to the kids but to everyone and they do it on a speaker. It's as if the community was a school. I think I would like this but at the smae time I wouldn't. I would like it because I have a free day and I would be kind of like a surprise. I wouldn't like it because since they didn't warn us ahead maybe we had something important planned fot that day and then we wouldn't be able to do it anymore or we would have to wait till the next day.

Chapter 18
Pg 131 Quote:
"It was clear to him what a terribly difficult and lonely life it was, despite the honor."
Questions/Comments:
I wonder if Jonas regrets having given the job as the Reciever. If I were Jonas I would have reasons to regret the job but I would also have reasons to like it. I would regret because of what it says excatly in this quote. It's a difficult, lonely job and you can't turn back no matter what. I would like it because I would get to experience and see things I never knew like color, birthdays, books and lots of other things. I feel sorry for Jonas, The Giver and the previous Receiver's before them but I also feel glad that they got to enjoy seeing color and all that. But I still don't think it's fair that they have to live a sad, deppresing life with a job that they didn't even pick.

Chapter 19
Pg 141 Quote:
"He killed it! My father killed it!"
Questions/Comments:
I was in complete and total shock when i found out what release really meant. I never really though about what happend in released. I always thought that when they performed the ceremony of release after that the person would just walk out of some big doors and they would be taken to somewhere else in a car or something. The farthest thing from my mind was that they killed them. I mean why on Earth would you harm poor inocent people?! Especially babies like Gabriel. They haven't done anything wrong, they dont deserve to be killed. What about the old? They may have had great lives and now it comes down to this??? I hate release! Yea I dissagree with alot of things but this istruly not fair. (Good thing it isn't real.)

Chapter 20
Pg 145 Quote:
"But the memories tell us that it has not always been. People felt things once."
Questions/Comments:
I wonder what kind of place that community was before the community was build. I wonder if the community was built and they were normal for awhile and then they made it a "utopia." I wonder why they decide to make it a utopia and then stayed living like that if they knew it wasnt really perfect. Nothing is or will ever be perfect. I remember that The Giver said that the people were the ones who chose to make their community a utopia and i'm pretty sure if everyone knew wat Jonas and the Giver know nobody would like to live there. I sure wouldn't. I really, really, really think that they should let these community go back to the way it was. Yea i know that then they would feel pain and all that but they would also learn about and experience alot of things that they couldn't even imagine exsisted! They would have memories and yea maybe painfull ones but great ones to. Like they say no pain, no game.

Chapter 21
Pg 155 Quote:
"Third, he had stolen his father's bike."
Questions/Comments:
I know that stealing is a very serious crime in any community but I think that in this case it was kind of ok. I mean it was important that he took his father's bike because it had the child seat and Gabriel needed to be safe during the journey. If he wan't in the child seat he could fall of the bike and get hurt and Jonas didn't have the right things to heal an injury. I think thats Jonas did the right thing because if he left Gabriel in the community he would have been killed. Jonas knew that of course and he wasn't about to let him die because like i said before they haven't done anything wrong so why should they pay the price?? I know it was wrong but sometimes you have to break the rules to do the right thing.

Chapter 22
Pg 161 Quote:
"Though he had never seen one before, he identified it from his fading memories....it was a bird."
Questions/Comments:
In the previeous chapters I have learned that no one in their community has seen animals or even know that animals exercist. I don't think agree with this either. Yes I know that animals can be very harmful but they should not be completly banned from their comminity. If they were really worrieed then they should make like a zoo or something. Or they should allowed each family unit to own a one dog.

Chapter 23
Pg 168 Quote:
"Behing him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
Questions/Comments:
At first I thought that i understood the ending but once I read this sentence it kind of confused me. I wonder and wanna know what really happend to Jonas. DId he die, did he live? I also wonder what this sentence really means. Does it mean that before in the community there was music and all of that? Before Sameness?? Or does it mean that he hears music in his past? This sentence really brought up alot of questions for me and i think that it means that now that Jonas is reaching Elsewhere he's really hearing music and he says he thinks from behind him because he wishes he would have heard music before. Then it says but perhaps it was just an echo because he realizes that he never heard it before and that its really coming from Elsewhere. This is one of the best books I have ever read and I enjoyed it very much.

Period 2/3
Science & Medicine in the Han Dynasty

The Han Dynasty began in 206 B. C. E. and ended in 220 C. E. It began when a rebel, Liu Bang was unhappy with the harsh and unfair Legalist government and rebelled against the Quin rulers. The Han Dynasty (pronounced Hahn) lasted for about 400 years and in this time made many advances in both medicine and science.
The Chinese invented new cures and discovered many things. Two main cures they invented were acupuncture and moxibustion. Acupuncture is when thin needles are inserted in different parts of the body. Moxibustion is when a cone filled with powdered leaves is placed on the skin and burned. The Chinese believed that heat took away pain.
Some of the discoveries made in medicine were very important and are still used today. They discovered that blood moves from the heart to the body and back. They found out how to tell if a person was healty or not by checking the pulse. They discovered a type of wine that can be used as anesthetic. An anesthetic is something that takes away pain.
Some of the other things invented by the Chinese were the seismograph, compass and paper. The seismograph is an object made for detecting earthquakes. The first seismograph was made of bronze and it was circular. There was pendulum in the middle that was surrounded by 8 sculpted animal heads. The vibration made one of the balls fall in direction of the earthquake. The compass is an object that determines which way is which like north, south or east. It wasn’t until the 200s C.E. that the Chinese understood that a lodestone is always pointing north-south direction because of Earth’s magnetism.
The Chinese also studied the sky which they call the heavens. They recorded comets which they called “broom stars.” They found out that the moon shines because it reflects the light of the sun. Chinese also learned solar eclipses happen when the Moon blocks our view of the sun.
The Chinese made many important discoveries which are still used today. They also invented many new things which helped us evolve in both medicine and science. Things like inventing paper and gunpowder and observating animals. The Han Dynasty is considered a golden age of China because people were happy with there rulers and they made many advances which still help us today.

The
